To reactivate this Berlin excursion restaurant on the Spree, which had been closed since 1991, the building underwent a comprehensive structural refurbishment. Years of vacancy and vandalism had damaged the original fabric so severely that parts of the building had to be reconstructed. A rear wing containing a new kitchen area has been added to the Swiss-chalet- style structure. As the opening move in the future urban development of the Spreepark site between Treptower Park and Plånterwald, the building now serves, alongside its restaurant use with a new beer garden, as a cultural venue with art exhibition spaces and artist residencies. The Eierhaeuschen was once a very popular destination with over 800 seats in its beer garden and already had to be extended after just ten years. It originally also included a boat landing and a timber-built wing housing a bowling alley. The aim of the restoration was to expose as much of the original fabric as possible, reconstructing parts of it and complementing it with contemporary means, so that the different historical layers remain legible while the character of the ensemble is preserved. The rear building volume, connected to the historic structure by a glazed bridge, was designed not to compete with the richly ornamented existing building. It is clad, including its roof surfaces, in untreated larch-wood battens forming a continuous wooden "curtain" around the building.
