This is an academic urban design proposal developed at Nha Trang City. The “Rebirth from the Source” proposal aims to transform the Cai River into the cultural and ecological heart of Nha Trang. Instead of seeing the river as a dividing line, the project treats it as a lifeline that reconnects people, nature, and heritage—honoring its historic role in shaping the city’s identity. The masterplan focuses on two main goals: restoring nature and revitalizing daily life. Nature-based solutions like mangrove corridors, eco parks, and green belts will help fight flooding, rising salinity, and climate risks while boosting water quality and biodiversity. At the same time, the plan will create inviting public spaces—heritage trails, cultural squares, and community hubs—to improve local life and celebrate Nha Trang’s identity. The riverfront is divided into three zones: - “Suburban zone”: Mangrove restoration along railways and canals behind the salinity dam. - “Urban residential zone”: Natural buffers like green corridors and eco parks to protect neighborhoods from flooding while adding recreation and tourism spots. - “Service and tourism zone”: Integrating cultural landmarks, shoreline protection, and vibrant public plazas that blend economic growth with heritage. A guiding narrative, “One River – Three Banks of Culture,” turns the riverfront into a sequence of unique places—from the spiritual Bank of Origin at Ponagar Temple, through the Bank of Resonance celebrating Cham culture, to the lively Bank of Intermingling at Dam Market. Backed by a 12-year rollout, this plan offers a practical path forward, creating a self-sustaining urban ecosystem where ecology, culture, and community thrive together—giving Nha Trang a renewed river and a stronger identity.
