The redesign of Eliava market revolves around the idea of a labyrinth. We chose this concept because it reflects the nature of the market itself a place that’s busy, lively, and full of possibilities but often felt chaotic and overwhelming. By using the labyrinth as a foundation, we’ve created a space that brings order and structure while keeping the excitement of discovery alive. The specific labyrinth we drew inspiration from wasn’t just a metaphor. We took its shapes and paths and used them to plan the market’s layout. The bridges, stairs, and even the underground garbage collection system all follow the same structure as the labyrinth, making everything feel connected and purposeful. The market is made up of two levels that only touch at their corners, creating a feeling of openness. This allows natural light and air to flow freely through the space, making it brighter, fresher, and more inviting. Bridges and stairs connect the sections, giving visitors a chance to explore without ever feeling lost. The design makes movement easy for everyone - customers, vendors, and service providers, while maintaining a sense of discovery. One of the main goals of this redesign was to solve the long-standing issues of pollution and waste. To address this, we created an underground garbage collection system that matches the labyrinth’s structure. Waste is funneled from all areas of the market into chutes that lead to a central collection point, where it’s sealed and transported. This system keeps the market clean and organized, which is a huge improvement over how things used to be. Another problem we tackled was the handling of hazardous materials, especially in areas where car parts and industrial goods are sold. Spill collection cells were added in these zones to safely contain harmful substances, preventing pollution and protecting both people and the environment. Beyond solving practical issues, the labyrinth design makes the market a more enjoyable place to be. A new ventilation system keeps the air fresh and removes bad smells, creating a healthier atmosphere. Open pathways let in natural light, making the space feel welcoming and reducing the need for artificial lighting. The labyrinth isn’t just a pattern for the market’s layout, it’s the backbone of how the whole space works. It shapes how people move, how waste is managed, and how different parts of the market connect. It creates a balance between structure and exploration, offering visitors a sense of adventure while keeping things organized and functional. This redesign is more than a solution to old problems—it is a vision for the future. The new Eliava market is a place where people can explore, connect, and experience something unique. The labyrinth brings structure, sustainability, and excitement, making it a space that serves both the community and the environment.
