Attic Apartment by the Sea, Gelendzhik, 55 sq. m. I took on a challenging project: an attic space that came with a pre-existing design plan, partially completed finishes, and furniture already purchased based on another designer's vision. The owner was unhappy with how it was turning out; she had waited a year for me to become available. I decided to take the risk and tackle this complex project, aiming to create something entirely different from the original concept—yet perfectly in tune with the location itself. While exploring the area around the property, I spotted a lighthouse. Tall and stately, it stands atop a cliff where waves crash and churn into foam; in the background, the house with its attic sits against a backdrop of mountains... It was a picturesque scene. The interior transformation—realizing the owner's dream of shifting from an unfinished "Lavender Provence" style to a sun-drenched Italian home with a sea view—followed a carefully crafted plan that prioritized both functionality and detail. An attic space possesses a unique charm of its own. The sloping ceiling creates a sense of coziness and intimacy while simultaneously adding a dynamic quality to the room. We used exposed beams to highlight the structure of the angled ceiling; rather than trying to hide the angles, we used a unified texture across both the ceiling and walls to blur the boundaries, thereby visually expanding and uniting the space. We cultivated an authentic atmosphere through specific details: arched doorways, bronze-finish hardware, wrought-iron handles, wall sconces and a chandelier, a massive antique table, and vibrant colors. Stone wall accents, a tall, substantial headboard, and textured textiles added both color and softness to the home. Skylights flood the space with natural light, creating a connection to the sky and inviting the sunshine in. Wooden blinds were added to control the lighting and create a play of light and shadow. In my view, everything came together perfectly! We managed to shift the style away from a light "Provence" look toward a warm, textured coastal interior—a space where you can hear the sound of waves and rustling pines outside, and where the surrounding landscape’s hues are subtly woven into the finishes and décor. The key holder, crafted in Belarus based on my own design, beautifully captures the colors and textures of the attic space, serving as a standout feature in the entryway. It is the first thing to greet guests at "Attic by the Sea" and is sure to leave a lasting impression on vacationers. An abundance of light and air creates a sense of freedom, lightness, and spaciousness. This attic is a space with real character!
